Secrets, secrets are no fun

So, I've always been one to believe in being honest with people. Honesty is the best policy, they say. It might sound a little Gertrude Goodie Two Shoes, but it's me. Yes, I've told some white lies in my time, but bold-faced lying just isn't my thing. I guess I can't say I've never done it before either, but it was when I was much younger and now I'm older and wiser. Or so I thought. Is it lying if you just purposely choose not to tell someone something? You know, just leaving something out. And is it good to tell the truth knowing it will make you feel much better(to have whatever it is off your chest), but make someone else feel much, much worse? How do you decide when someone needs to know something? Should you let time pass by and wait to say something? These are questions I find myself facing. I won't go into details, but help!

This was my exact same thought the other day and I decided on not saying anything in my case (ex 2).

However it all depends on the subject matter...

EX 1: if it's a something that will eventually gain (or should gain) the other person than go ahead and tell the person.

Ex 2: But if it's something that make just you feel better and the other person not, why tell them?

This was my reasoning the other day, hope it helps you :)

I was going to say the same as Astrid - but eek, not an easy situation!!

Thanks, girls. It is definitely under category 2. I will feel better, but this person won't. I just wish I knew where this person stands on this kind of issue-better honest than withhold information or better to just not know at all. I kind of think it's the second one, though. Arghhhh!

hey there...not easy questions to respond too consider lack of context, BUT, if the situation is based on a relationship problem (ie. you know of a bf/gf cheating on their significant other and this significant other has no idea), then I think it would be best to say something. No one likes to be jerked around or to waste their time with someone who obviously doesnt love them, so you'd be doing that other person a favour. Sure it would hurt the person in the short term, but it would save them the heartache or finding out much later and knowing they wasted all that time. If your current dilemma has nothing to do with relationship stuff, then I can only suggest putting yourself in the person's shoes...would you want someone to tell you the secret you're keeping?

Sorry kid, sounds like a tough situation to be stuck in.

Thanks for the advice, C!
